"Meaningful leadership a chance of success"

SEPTEMBER 2019
ONDERNEMERSRAND MAGAZINE

We see companies such as Tony Chocolonely, Tesla, Triodos or Patagonia as a rocket today, while other companies are struggling and struggling to keep up with the pace of development. That going like a rocket is not only reserved for large and well-known brands but is within reach for everyone, is clear from the example of Wigger Van het Laar as described elsewhere in this magazine. What do these companies do differently from others and more importantly: What must I do as an entrepreneur to achieve the same?

The key question therefore is: How do we tackle that? Here are the following logical steps:
1. Create a strong mission & vision; a shared ideal!
2. Let the leadership focus on giving space and trust to employees.
3. Let the people and the teams be as self-organizing as possible.
4. Finally, help employees to connect with the mission & vision.

1. Create a strong mission & vision; a shared ideal!
It is human nature to want to contribute to something that is bigger than itself. This leads to a sense of calling, enthusiasm and makes people flourish. A good mission therefore transcends every interest and ensures that people can connect with it and be inspired by it.
Tony Chocolonely's mission is not just to make chocolate, but to make slave-free chocolate. Patagonia doesn't just make outdoor clothing, their credo is: “We're in business to save our home planet.” Closer to home, we see that Wigger Van het Laar's new mission is to solve problems in the relationship between customers and their debtors prevent or resolve.

2. Let the leadership focus on giving space and trust to employees.
It is essential that leadership offers employees the space and freedom to determine how they can best achieve results. She must dare and want to undergo the transformation from control to letting go and offering space. This starts with the most important "job", namely making good decisions and actually propagating them in an authentic way. On that basis, people gain confidence in leadership. Finally, it is important to strengthen this trust by listening carefully, constantly connecting with people and inspiring them.

3. Let the people and the teams be as self-organizing as possible.
Now it is important that everyone experiences that they themselves are responsible for their own goals and for their team goals. As management you give 100% room to the employees to organize this themselves, this creates trust. The mission is clear and people feel that they contribute to this from their own drive and unique talent. The challenge now is to make clear for each day, week and month what contribution we expect from each other.
